Oso Grande Elementary School

Grades K - 5

Our Mission is Learning
“We will ensure that all our children will learn more today than yesterday, and more tomorrow than today.”

It is the goal of Oso Grande Elementary School to empower students to become responsible citizens and lifelong learners by challenging them in a positive, secure learning environment. Students will grow and learn in a collaborative culture where parents, teachers and staff work together for the shared vision of increased student achievement. The school culture is one of mutual respect among children, parents, school staff and the community.

We envision Oso Grande Elementary School as a place where staff:

  • Works together in collaborative teams.
  • Implements ongoing, research-based strategies to monitor and improve student learning.
  • Demonstrates a personal commitment to the academic success and general well being of every student
  • Encourages responsibility, fairness, caring citizenship, trustworthiness, and respect.
  • Provides a safe and nurturing environment whereby students are encouraged to make healthy choices.

The Professional Learning Community of Oso Grande Elementary School encourages a love of lifelong learning in students, staff, and parents. All members of the community are committed to high standards of excellence both academically and socially. Diversity and achievement are celebrated to foster a vision of unity so that our students can meet and exceed the demands of the 21st century.

Oso Grande Elementary School is the third elementary school to open its doors to students in Ladera Ranch within the past five years. As a “walking school,”all of the families live within the local community and walk (or ride) in neighborhood groups to our beautiful, new school. We currently house 546 students, grades K-5, and are projected to have 740 students in the upcoming year. Thirty classrooms, a multipurpose room, and a computer lab feature the latest in state-of-the-art technology, including wireless Internet access in every classroom and an emphasis on multimedia and integration of technology into the curriculum.

The focal theme of the school is Teaming for the Learning of All Children (TLC), a 2005 Golden Bell award-winning program. The goal of theprogram is to improve the academic performance of all students through differentiated instruction to address their individual needs with special education support services provided within the context of the regular education program. The TLC models scaffolds students for an hour a day during the “skills” portion of reading and math by grouping them according to their instructional level with additional support. Students move between classrooms within Grades 1-3 for an intensive hour of “skills” instruction with other students of similar abilities. A TLC team of support staff is available to provide additional assistance to students during scaffolding, and works with small groups of students in all grades.

At Oso Grande, both teachers and students use a variety of technological resources as tools to increase student learning throughout all areas of the curriculum in an exciting, dynamic environment. Students use e-tools to produce quality work products and presentations. Oso Grande’s voluntary “Learning with Laptops” program is available for students in Grades 3 and above. Parents purchase a laptop for their child. The teachers integrate the daily use of the laptops into the curriculum so that students are using the laptop as a very natural tool to assist them in the learning process.

Our positive behavior plan is based on the qualities we expect from all of our students. These are identified as our BEARS traits: Be ready; Encourage kindness; Accept responsibility; Respect others; Solve problems. Students who exhibit these traits earn Golden Grizzly tickets to be used in daily prize drawings. We are very proud of our students!
